Packing Tips

A few simple steps to make sure your clothes arrive in perfect condition.

Before You Pack

Wash everything first. All items should be clean and fully dry before packing. We store your clothes as-is, so sending them fresh means they'll stay fresh.

We steam everything on arrival. Don't worry about wrinkles from packing — we steam every item before photographing and storing it. Your clothes will look their best in your digital closet.

What NOT to Send

  • Items that are wet, damp, or not fully dry
  • Anything with strong odors (smoke, mildew, chemicals)
  • Food, jewelry, electronics, or hazardous materials

See our full list of item guidelines

Tops & Tees

  • Fold flat (don't ball up). Sleeves in, fold in thirds — like you'd see at a store.
  • Separate darks from lights with a layer of tissue paper or a light-colored tee between them to prevent color transfer.
  • Delicate knits and cashmere: fold gently, don't compress. These stretch out if crammed in.

Pants & Jeans

  • Fold in half lengthwise, then in thirds. Stack heavier items (jeans) on the bottom of the box.
  • Zip all zippers and button all buttons before folding — open hardware can snag other items.
  • Dress pants: fold with care along the existing crease. We'll steam them on arrival.

Dresses & Skirts

  • Fold lengthwise first, then gently roll or fold in thirds. Tissue paper between layers helps.
  • Beaded or sequined dresses: fold face-inward so embellishments are protected, and place them on top of other items, not underneath.
  • We'll hang everything on proper hangers when it arrives.

Outerwear & Coats

  • Fold loosely — don't compress. Down jackets especially need room; crushing them damages the insulation.
  • Leather jackets: fold gently with tissue paper between layers. Don't let leather touch plastic directly.
  • Heavy winter coats go on the bottom of the box. Lighter jackets on top.

Formal & Special Care

  • Use a large box. Suits, gowns, and wedding dresses need room.
  • Place tissue paper inside every fold — the more tissue, the fewer creases.
  • Beaded or sequined pieces: face-up, on top of everything else. These snag easily.
  • Wedding dresses: wrap in a clean white sheet or lots of tissue paper. We'll transfer it to an archival garment bag on arrival.
  • Don't stress about creases — we steam every formal item before photographing.

Shoes

  • Stuff each shoe with socks, tissue paper, or newspaper to hold its shape during transit.
  • Wrap each shoe individually (a plastic bag or tissue paper works fine) so they don't scuff each other.
  • Place shoes at the bottom of the box, soles facing each other.
  • Make sure shoes are clean and dry — dirt on soles can transfer to your other clothes.

Accessories

  • Hats: stuff the crown with tissue or a soft tee to keep the shape. Don't flatten them under heavy items.
  • Belts: coil loosely, don't fold them (folding cracks leather over time).
  • Scarves and ties: roll, don't fold. Folding creates permanent creases.
  • Wrap anything with metal hardware (buckles, clasps) so it doesn't scratch other items.

Bags & Purses

  • Stuff bags with tissue paper or soft clothes to hold their shape.
  • Tuck chain straps inside the bag so they don't leave impressions on the exterior.
  • Wrap hardware (buckles, clasps, zippers) with tissue paper.
  • Each bag should be wrapped individually — colors transfer between leather surfaces.

Sports Equipment

  • Make sure everything is fully clean and dry.
  • Golf clubs, skis, and snowboards ship separately through our equipment shipping partner — you'll get specific instructions for those.
  • Smaller gear (boots, wetsuits, rackets): pack with padding. Clean soles and surfaces.

That's it — you're ready to pack!

Use your prepaid return label and drop your box at any UPS location. We'll take it from here.
